Better Together: Antioxidants Resveratrol and Curcumin

Protecting cells from oxidative stress is one of the best ways to support overall health and well-being. Getting enough antioxidants from food and supplements can help ensure we have the potent nutrients we need to fight free radicals and harmful pathogens.

Unfortunately, we are all exposed to cell-damaging free radicals every day in the environment, personal care products, food, and home care products. Even the furniture and clothing we buy could contain particles harmful to human health. That means it is more important than ever to increase our consumption of healthy nutrients.

The best way to do that is by eating a diet full of colorful fruits and vegetables – especially leafy greens and berries. However, sometimes even the best of us don’t make sound nutritional choices or even have access to these foods regularly.

That’s where supplements can help – and they can even deliver the world’s most powerful nutrients to us with methods that can absorb better and be even more available to our cells and systems.

Two vital nutrients with incredible benefits are curcumin and resveratrol. They’re potent on their own and both can be found in many foods. However, when they’re paired together in one convenient supplement, they’re even more effective.

What is curcumin?

You’re probably familiar with turmeric – a perennial plant related to ginger. Dried turmeric roots are the source of the vibrant orange spice that’s a staple of Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine.  For thousands of years, it has been used in India as a flavorful spice (especially in curry) and for its health and wellness benefits.

Curcumin is the active component of turmeric that gives it this vibrant color and health benefits. It has been used since ancient times in traditional practices such as Ayurveda for balance and human health. Garlic also contains curcumin.

Curcumin is a polyphenol and a bright yellow, fat-soluble substance that has antioxidant properties.* It also helps maintain a healthy inflammatory response and helps support brain health.* Curcumin may also help with joint discomfort caused by inflammation.*1 In addition, curcumin has demonstrated the potential to support wound healing and antimicrobial effects.2

Unfortunately, consuming curcumin by itself does not immediately lead to health benefits. Curcumin on its own is not readily bioavailable. It typically absorbs poorly and is metabolized quickly.3 This makes it more challenging to enjoy the benefits of curcumin.

What is resveratrol?

Resveratrol is a polyphenol antioxidant. That means it’s produced naturally by plants and acts as a defense mechanism against environmental stressors.4 This includes issues such as UV rays, periods of drought, pathogens, and more. As it turns out, these polyphenols are not only good for plants but people too.

Resveratrol is most notably found in the skin of red grapes and in dark chocolate. So yes – you can find resveratrol in wine and your favorite sweet treat! That doesn’t mean overindulging in wine and chocolate will help you get enough resveratrol. The good news is it is also found in peanuts, mulberries, cranberries, pistachios, blueberries, plums, and other plants.

The Japanese knotweed root is an excellent source of resveratrol. Native to Eastern Japan, China and Korea, this plant has been used for centuries for wellness, where the whole flowering plant is useful. In addition, Japanese knotweed root contains high concentrations of trans-resveratrol – the most effective, most active, and most-studied form of the antioxidant.

Resveratrol is a powerful nutrient that supports cardiovascular health, blood sugar metabolism, heart health, skin health and more.*5 If you aren’t eating enough foods rich in resveratrol, a supplement may help.

The benefits of liposomal curcumin and resveratrol

Together, resveratrol and curcumin are powerful nutrients that may have a significant impact on joint health, mobility, stiffness, and overall discomfort.*6 This includes occasional joint aches and discomfort caused by inflammation.*Although curcumin and resveratrol both have many benefits, they metabolize quickly and do not absorb well, resulting in poor bioavailability.

Liposomal supplements solve this problem in an innovative delivery system, ensuring each nutrient gets where it needs to go for targeted support. One recent study even reports that the “liposomal delivery system is ideal for the lipophilic characteristics of curcumin.”7 Check out our favorite Liposomal Curcumin + Resveratrol here.

Here’s how it works. Liposomal curcumin and resveratrol are housed inside of tiny, double-layered “bubbles.” They are so small that you won’t notice them in a convenient spray application. These bubbles protect each nutrient from harsh digestive elements – all while increasing the bioavailability and absorption rate. As a result, you can get the antioxidant support from curcumin and resveratrol that you need.*

Furthermore, since curcumin and resveratrol are both fat-soluble, absorption can be improved by taking this supplement with a meal.

Curcumin and resveratrol supplements are supportive to any routine, especially if you’re looking for natural, plant-based antioxidants. However, before taking any supplement, be sure to discuss it with a healthcare practitioner that you trust to get the best results.
